The Athlone Drug Awareness Group

was established in April 1996 as a result of public concern about the growing drug problem in Athlone / Moate and surrounding areas. The group consist of members of various statutory, voluntary and community bodies along with a number of concerned individuals. A.D.A.G. is a voluntary group. The core aim of the ADAG is to encourage the involvement of people in the Athlone area in partnership with the voluntary and statutory services in developing strategies to reduce the demand for drugs. A major part of the groups function is to create a greater awareness about the problem of alcohol and drug misuse through local and relevant initiatives.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF A.D.A.G

1. The core aim of Athlone Drug Awareness Group is to encourage the involvement of people in the Athlone area in partnership with the voluntary and statutory services in developing strategies to reduce the demand for drugs.

2. To create a greater awareness about the problem of drug misuse through local and relevant initiatives.

3. The group will act as a lobbing body to bring various issues of concern to the attention of relevant statutory bodies.

4. The group believes that the education of parents and the youth people about drug misuse is of primary importance. Therefore the group both supports and encourages any initiatives that will enhance the knowledge of local community in relation to drug misuse.

5. The group supports rehabilitation programmes for those with substance misuse problems and encourages the development of appropriate rehabilitation services for those with substance misuse problems
