Athlone Drug Awareness Group
The Athlone Drug Awareness Group (A.D.A.G.) was established in April 1996 in response to growing public concern about drug misuse in Athlone, Moate, and the surrounding areas.The group is a voluntary, community-based organisation made up of representatives from statutory, voluntary, and community bodies, as well as concerned local individuals.
A.D.A.G. works in partnership with local services and community members to promote awareness, education, prevention, and rehabilitation in relation to drug and alcohol misuse.
Our mission is to build a safer, healthier and more informed community and support those affected by substance misuse by referral to appropriate services.

Aims and Objectives of A.D.A.G
One
The core aim of Athlone Drug Awareness Group is to encourage the involvement of people in the Athlone area in partnership with the voluntary and statutory services in developing strategies to reduce the demand for drugs.
Two
To create a greater awareness about the problem of drug misuse through local and relevant initiatives.
Three
The group will act as a lobbing body to bring various issues of concern to the attention of relevant statutory bodies.
Four
The group believes that the education of parents and the youth people about drug misuse is of primary importance. Therefore the group both supports and encourages any initiatives that will enhance the knowledge of local community in relation to drug misuse.
Five
The group supports recovery programmes for those with substance misuse problems and encourages the development of appropriate rehabilitation services for those with substance misuse problems.
Terms of Reference Athlone Drug Awareness Group
- To act as a resource through which local actions can be developed and delivered within the context of the Midland Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force Strategic Plan and in line with the National Drug & Alcohol Strategy Reducing Harm Supporting Recovery – A Health led response to drug and alcohol use in Ireland 2017-2025.
- To create positive links with the community and agencies on the ground (through networking with members of the Group).
- To support the development of a partnership model of operation with the various community statutory and voluntary agencies within each community.
- To raise awareness of the issues of drugs and alcohol misuse within the wider community.
- To represent various target group issues and explore adequate responses within the context of
the MRDATF Strategic Plan.
